The Others...Detroit

Round 12 of Monster Energy Supercross takes over the Motor City and Ford Field. Alleys turn into pits and championships take a turn in Detroit.

The talk of qualifying sessions was the run in between Christian Craig and Alex Martin. Craig made an aggressive move that sent Martin flying off the track and out of the nights program. In the 250 class, Dylan Ferrandis would have a slight edge with his 52.549 and head to the night show as the number one qualifier. Broc Tickle gave his hometown crowd something to cheer about as he set the fastest time amongst the 450 class onboard his RCH Suzuki. We were excited to see the 918 of Michael Akaydin qualify a season best 27th in the 450 class and Jerry Robin 12th fastest in 250 qualifying.

Heat one in the 250 class would be won by Geico Honda's Christian Craig but thanks to his earlier incident with Martin, he'd still be forced to last gate pick in the main. Adam Cianciarulo would grab the W in heat two and happily take the momentum into the main as he looks to tighten the championship chase. Honda may still be without Ken Roczen, but Cole Seely proved his worth with a heat one win. Ryan Dungey looked aggressive and ready to fight as he took the 450 heat two win. In semi qualifiers it'd be Davi Millsaps and Eli Tomac getting the wins and advancing. A roller coaster night sent TLD/KTM backed Jordan Smith to the 250 Last Chance Qualifier. Smith would lead all 5 laps and be joined in the main by Kyle Cunningham, Zack Williams and Gracie Featherstone. In 450 LCQ action it'd be the JGR Suzuki of Justin Barcia claiming the win with Nick Schmidt, Vince Friese and Kyle Chisholm transferring with him to the main.

When the gate dropped on the 250 main event, the real carnage began. The field made it as far as the first turn before we saw bikes laying on the ground. One of them was the Husqvarna of point leader Zach Osborne. Adam Cianciarulo grabbed the holeshot but a quick mistake allowed Star Yamaha rider, Dylan Ferrandis to the lead. His mistake would hand the lead to Joey Savatgy who'd make a mistake of his own and allow Jordan Smith to the lead. Savatgy would battle back but Smith would have none of it on his way to career win number one. As for the 450 championship, Eli Tomac and the fellas over at Kawasaki can smell it. Tomac continues to be in a groove as Ryan Dungey found himself battling with fellow KTM riders Blake Baggett and Davi Millsaps. Eventually finding third behind RedBull KTM teammate Marvin Musquin, Dungey lost very valuable points to the 3 machine. The championship deficit is down to 7 points.

A couple privateers put in some solid rides in the 250 class while in Detroit. Gannon Audette and Anthony Rodriguez each cracked the top ten. Jeremy Smith made his first ever main event. Jesse Wentland put in a solid ride on his TiLube Honda on his way to a 13th in the main event. Wentland has made every main thus far and currently sits 15th in points. With three east rounds remaining, I wouldn't count the 62 out for a top ten finish.
